In a major policy speech two weeks ago, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert presented a political strategy to resolve the conflict with the Palestinians, demonstrating his hope of calming the turbulent situation along the Palestinian/Israeli border. In his speech, Olmert promised to lift restrictions on occupied territories within Gaza, release many Palestinians currently held in Israeli jails, and to help create a viable state within Gaza.

The deal calls for the removal of all Israeli troops from the small strip of land occupied by over 1.4 million Palestinians and the cessation of Palestinian rockets fired into northern Israel.
