2007 Gameball Nominations
A graduate’s review of the last four years
April 7, 2007
Wesley Armstrong
Over the course of the four years that I have graced this lovely campus, there has been a wide range of events, occurrences, and people in and around the Trinity Western University bubble. As it is now time for me to leave, I feel that the greatest and most ridiculous of these events and people should receive an award equally as great and ridiculous: the gameball. So without further ado, here are my TWU experience gameball nominations.
Best GroundLevel Concert - Emery (2004)
Remember what the lawn in front of the caf looked like on the second day of classes in the 2004-2005 school year? It was a trampled mudpit. And believe it or not, it had nothing to do with a solid month of torrential downpours. It was caused by hundreds of TWU students moshing and crowd surfing in front of a stage. TWU students moshing on campus? Yep, all it took was the high energy thrashings of Emery to incite one of the more spectacular occurrences of TWU history. Definitely worthy of a gameball.
Best TWU Band - Love and Wolves
Josh Harskamp and the boys of Love and Wolves have yet to actually complete an album and they have been pretty quiet on the concert scene this year, but they still get the gameball for best TWU band. Filling the stage with more amps and instrumentation than a small orchestra, their deafening yet melodic sound won the hearts of enough people last year to earn them a victory in the 2006 GroundLevel Battle of the Bands. Have a gameball.
Best TWU Play - Taming of the Shrew (2007)
Yes, I know that this is the most recent release from the Theatre department, but I promise that near sightedness is not a factor in this decision. Two and a half hours of Shakespeare is no easy task, and the cast pulled it off on opening night with flying colours. It made me want to go watch 10 Things I Hate About You, but I don’t know if that is a compliment. Here’s a gameball for the cast to share.
Best Student Art Piece - “The Trinity”
by Lu (aka Felicity)
Lu, who has taken on several monikers through the year (the best of which being Felicity), often incorporates his fascination with the human nude into his artwork. “The Trinity” depicts three such males, reclining and reaching out towards each other in a manner reminiscent of Michelangelo’s “Creation of Adam.” Keep up the good work Lu, and have a gameball.
Best Costume – Erin Hughes as Edward
Scissorhands (Halloween 2005)
Only Erin Hughes could make some belts, garbage bags, makeup and cardboard turn into the freakiest rendition of Edward Scissorhands imaginable. This, together with her impeccable talent at getting into character, made Erin a scissor-handed freak that would rival Johnny Depp himself. Very intimidating. Have a gameball; just don’t slice it to ribbons.
Greatest TWU Event in Langley - EA Fundraiser for a Langley Space
We are still very lacking in options for this category, so I’m drawing from a very recent event. The fundraiser at Ethical Addictions on March 25, 2007 for a community space in Langley featured several TWU bands, including the adult contemporary hits Worlds Apart and punk rock phenomenon Drugs. The packed audience ranged from the young to the very, very old. For helping bring the face of TWU off of our campus, here’s a gameball to Drugs and Worlds Apart.
Now you go...
Got something to say?
