Great expectations for social justice club

The International Social Justice Club (ISJC), which started Spring 2006, is excited to embark on its first full year at Trinity Western University. ISJC is a student-led club with two main goals. The first goal is to educate ISJC members and to raise awareness about social injustice issues around the world. Their second goal is to provide opportunities for students to get involved in making a difference about these issues.

It is easy to become overwhelmed with all of the problems prevalent in the world, and it can be difficult to know how to help victims of injustice. Consequently, ISJC is committed to initiating creative ways to fight for justice and to support international organizations.

Last year the club was busy with various projects. For Valentine’s Day, ISJC partnered with Street-E in the Raid Project. We sold flowers, candy, and serenades that were delivered to people all over campus. All of the proceeds went to free a girl from sex slavery in Cambodia. The club also set up a model refugee camp on campus for three days in order to raise awareness about refugees around the world. Some of the club members stayed in the camp all three days, eating beans and rice, and coordinating tours of the camp to give students a more personal view of what it would be like to live under such harsh conditions. On the last day, ISJC hosted an international market to raise funds for the work of Samaritan’s Purse, a social justice organization in Darfur, Sudan.

ISJC has even bigger expectations for the coming year. Already, several students have decided to shave their heads in order to raise awareness and resources to combat human trafficking and the use of child soldiers in Uganda. ISJC is also planning to host a fair trade coffee night, support World AIDS Day events, and bring back the popular Raid Project. The educational focus for this year will be on economic development, as poverty is the root cause of many social issues. ISJC is excited for new and returning members to bring forth their ideas for combating injustice.

If you are passionate about social justice and want to do something to help, come out to the ISJC meetings on Mondays at 5:15pm. For more information about the club and the location of the next meeting, visit our blog at xanga.com/socialjusticetwu
