Classy clubs
A Rocha TWU is a group of students interested in issues pertaining to the environment. They are the first student chapter of A Rocha Canada, which is part of an international Christian conservation organization started in Portugal. Regular activities include monthly community dinners with sustainable and organic food, visits to the A Rocha field-study centre for Volunteer Days, and their annual spring event, Earth Week. Additionally, biking and hiking trips are planned for the fall semester. Arochatwu@hotmail.com
The International Social Justice Club (ISJC) is a dynamic group of people interested in learning about social injustices and finding ways to make a meaningful and lasting impact. They focus on learning and awareness, taking action, and preparing for the future. In previous years the club has brought in guest speakers, organized fundraisers, and written letters to the government. Each year’s focus changes with its members, so if you have any ideas or interests you are invited to come and share them. Aristotle’s Seventh Element (A7E), TWU’s theatre club, strives to create an awareness of the many interactions occurring between theatre students and between audiences and the theatre. A7E events will include unconventional worship nights, themed Vancouver outings, and games nights. Most activities will occur on Monday evenings. Danae.Bargen@mytwu.ca
The new Biology Club is focused on community involvement and student-professor relationships for pre-med and biology students. The club will showcase the work of Dr. Ka Yin Leung, TWU’s new Dean of Science, and later will showcase the research of TWU students who were working in the biology field over the summer. The club is preparing a Faith and Science Week in the spring that will feature physics, biology, chemistry, and philosophy professors. The Foreign Affairs Society (FAS) is a group of students passionate about world affairs. The FAS seeks to inform students on current political and foreign events by stimulating debates on issues relevant to students and promoting discussions of the current systems and methodologies of government. Through events such as the Trinity Western Model United Nations (held October 30-31), the FAS encourages involvement in issues both global and domestic to provide students with the opportunity to further their educational experience. The Student Business Association (SBA) is comprised of all business students and seeks to supplement and encourage business education through practical and enjoyable initiatives. The SBA brings in entrepreneurial guest speakers as well as career-oriented presenters such as etiquette professionals. Events include Monopoly Night, trips to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and tours of businesses like the Boeing Plant. The Music Guild is dedicated to facilitating the enjoyment of music at TWU within the department, across campus, and out into the community. The Guild does not just represent music majors; anyone who loves music and loves to share it with others is an integral member of Trinity’s music community. Watch for upcoming performances by music majors and other talented musicians on campus, including a coffee house in early October and performances by various groups and small ensembles throughout the semester. The Pre-Law Society is for TWU students who are planning to or are interested in attending law school after graduation. The purpose of PLS is to help educate students on the law school application process, the LSAT, and the legal profession. This year, the PLS will be sitting in on classes at UBC Law, visiting the BC Provincial Courthouse, and bringing in current law students to speak to members about their experience in law school. PLS will also bring current lawyers to help members learn if a career in law is right for them. twupls@gmail.com
The Future Teachers Society (FTS) is comprised of all TWU education students. The FTS executive organizes monthly events to better serve and connect the students, staff, and faculty of the School of Education. FTS also aims to impact the greater community of Langley through events specifically geared towards children and youth. Another aim of the FTS is to fundraise for the Wellspring Foundation, an educational facility in Rwanda. The FTS is still looking for a treasurer and a TWUSA representative. Diana.Stobbe@mytwu.ca
The Micro Financing Group is a new initiative that exists to send micro-loans to developing countries as a way to help create business and combat poverty. With ambition, resourcefulness, and inclusiveness as guiding principles, the group aims to establish a meaningful connection with a developing country, seeking to use the quality of generosity to its fullest potential.
