Going the extra mile
Great American statesman Henry Clay once said, “Of all human powers operating on the affairs of mankind, none is greater than that of competition.” Competition drives world events, national policies, the economy and you. Whether it’s against yourself or others, life is a competition; a struggle against something which impedes progress towards a goal. As university students, most of us hope to graduate and obtain a job which gives us meaning, enjoyment and, if nothing else, an income. Unfortunately, it’s inevitable that we’ll be competing against each other and other university students. As with any contest, there is a way to get an advantage: you must augment your resume and skill set.
One method is by doing more than is required. Regrettably, we often do ourselves the disfavour of participating in only what is necessary. Participating is a conscious choice which is equal parts willpower and discipline. Trinity Western offers many chances for extracurricular growth, such as serving in student leadership, ministry, recreation services, student clubs, and student media. Some of these opportunities do not come with money or grades attached to them. Do them anyway.
The next principle is more difficult. Success requires that you be willing to go beyond your comfort zone. It’s absolutely critical for you to grow and accept new challenges. This can be an uncomfortable and terrifying experience, but you will reap future dividends. For example, the mere thought of public speaking instigates a cocktail of nausea and spiking endorphins for many students. Mastery of this skill, however, opens doors and gives you a chance to shine.
Trinity Western gives students the chance to practice this ability as several classes include presentations in their curriculum. Instead of hiding behind the group extrovert, lace up and embrace a key speaking role. By going beyond your comfort zone you continue to push your boundaries. Consequently, less and less becomes uncomfortable.
Getting ahead takes work, discipline, and courage. Show future employers that you are a confident, industrious person who will accept and rise to challenges. Competition on the job market is stiff and you’ll need to be proactive if you want victory. Work hard, because the winner takes all.
