Beach House: Teen Dream

By John Hennenfent
Arts & Culture, Volume 14 Issue 8

Grade: A

While it’s early in 2010, Beach House’s Teen Dream is the album of the year. The 10-track effort from Baltimore duo Alex Scally and vocalist Victoria Legrand is a 49-minute dreamy atmospheric pop sequence that calms listeners and leaves them at peace. The album is both listenable as background music and substantial enough to warrant its own focused listening – a tricky task to tackle.
Legrand’s coarse vocals, mixed with Scally’s keyboard, are reminiscent of a modern-sounding Fleetwood Mac. Though every track is strong, standout tracks include “Norway,” “Better Times” and “10 Mile Stereo.” The whole album is a dream walk through a field of organic deliciousness.
