Fall Television Preview

It’s fall once again and, if you’re anything like me, that means one thing: TV is back. This season seems a little dryer than usual in terms of quality new content, but there are a few exceptions. By the time this sees print, the new season will be fully underway, but it’s not too late to get caught up. Provided below is a list of new programs to watch if you (like me) are sick of the usual glut of reality programs and crime/medical/legal dramas.

The Event (Mondays on NBC): NBC’s mash-up of fan-favourites Lost and 24 is an effort by the network to recreate the success of both. While it’s hard to say whether or not this sci-fi tinged drama will be able to deliver on the high expectations it holds, the premiere was intriguing enough to keep me tuned in.

Hawaii Five-O (Mondays on CBS): Okay, I realize that I had said that I wouldn’t recommend any cop shows, but this one seems different. Based on the premiere, it feels like a procedural drama made by Michael Bay, which means that there is a lot of action. If you’re looking for some mindless fun, check this one out.

Lone Star (Mondays on FOX): By the time you read this, Lone Star will most likely have been the first causality of cancellation, which is a shame considering I’d argue that it’s one of the best new shows this season. If this con-man drama about someone attempting to live two lives is somehow still airing when you read this, please give it a chance. You won’t be disappointed.

No Ordinary Family (Tuesdays on ABC): All you really need to know about this new drama is that it is the Fantastic Four meets The Incredibles, but is ABC’s baby.

Raising Hope (Tuesdays on FOX): This new sitcom from the creator of My Name Is Earl follows the story of a 23-year old man who, with the help of his dysfunctional family, is tasked with raising his child after a one-night stand. It’s pretty crazy, but it’s also plenty funny and has more heart than the majority of sitcoms.

Nikita (Thursdays on The CW): This slick new spy drama seems like an odd fit for The CW, but then again, it does have a very attractive cast. While it’s a little on the cheesy side, I’m liking it more than NBC’s new spy drama, The Undercovers.

Of course, I can’t forget to mention some returning favourites. If you haven’t given any of these gems a watch, I highly recommend you do so.

Chuck (Mondays on NBC): Chuck is a hilarious spy-dramedy that gets better with each season.
Fringe (Thursdays on FOX): This thrilling sci-fi procedural also features an engrossing mythology.

Community (Thursdays on NBC): Community is a hysterical, pop-culture-filled vision of what life is like on a community college campus.

Modern Family (Wednesdays on ABC): This one presents a comical look at—you guessed it—a modern family.
