Leap Year

By Breanne Fultz
Arts & Culture, Volume 14 Issue 8

Grade: B+

Running off to Ireland to propose to your boyfriend may not be everyone’s cup of tea, however, Amy Adams and Matthew Goode never ceased to delight in Leap Year, the latest romantic comedy from Anand Tucker.

The plot is simple enough: Anna (Adams) needs to get to Dublin in order to propose to her boyfriend, Jeremy (Adam Scott), but gets waylaid and ends up enlisting the help of an Irish local, Declan (Goode). While events unfold in a relatively predictable manner, the slick dialogue and genuine performance keep the film from getting stale.

Leap Year utilizes all the conventions of the romantic comedy to their fullest potential. Even the most contrived of situations feel sincere. The dialogue feels natural and the romantic banter runs fluidly.

Lush Irish landscapes, complete with rolling hills and a castle, provide a lovely backdrop to this adventure. The film also ventures into the historical buildings and elegance of Boston that add to the contrast of city and country in which the film plays.

This movie is perfect for groups of friends and a sure-fire hit for a first date.
