Noah and the Whale: First Days of Spring

[ album ]

By Kirk Anderson
Arts & Culture, Volume 14 Issue 4

First Days of Spring, the latest offering from Noah and the Whale, an English folk quartet, is something really special. They may have succeeded in creating the perfect homework music. It doesn’t fade entirely into the background, but it also isn’t distracting.

You may find yourself working more efficiently with Charlie Fink singing and strumming softly in the background, cheering you on. The band got the name from one of their favourite films, The Squid and the Whale, which is directed by Noah Baumbach. Parallels can be made to bands like Neutral Milk Hotel or Fionn Regan (who, if you don’t know, you definitely should look into as well.)

“Blue Skies” and “Love of an Orchestra” are the strongest songs on the album. The album features a running theme, a narrative. Fink was recently interviewed by Scotland on Sunday and explains “it tells a story, a love story. There are highs and lows again, but this time the ending’s optimistic.” Another point of interest on this album, is that Noah and the Whale have released in a deluxe edition CD, a film that accompanies the entire album. The trailer can be viewed on their official website. If you want to broaden your folk collection beyond Fleet Foxes or are in need of homework background music, First Days of Spring is for you.
