Sherlock Holmes (2009, Warner Bros.)
Grade: B
Guy Ritchie’s latest spectacle, Sherlock Holmes, centres on the reknowned private eye (Robert Downey Jr) and his sidekick, Dr. Watson (Jude Law) as they dash about Victorian London solving a mystery surrounding secret societies and scandal.
The movie has several laughs and even more electrifying action as Holmes and Watson solve crimes from 221b Baker St. in an effort to save Parliament from a plot to rule the world spearheaded by Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong).
True to Arthur Conan Doyle’s text, Holmes is cast as a bare-knuckle boxer, who’s calculating, meticulous personality allows him to be a force in the ring and on the streets. To modern viewers this goes over very well; it is almost as though Sherlock is a mixed martial artist, and a CSI at the same time.
Ritchie has a hit on his hands, and his fast paced style comes through with his trademark quick cuts and exciting story. With great acting from Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Mark Strong and Rachel McAdams, it makes for a very enjoyable film.
