The Cool Kids: The Bake Sale EP (2008)

Rap has emerged from the toilet where it has dwelled for the past decade and a half since the dawning of the bullets and bling era, and The Cool Kids are getting in on the action. Other Chicago acts like Common, Kanye and Lupe have helped to usher in a new age in rap and have triggered a rejuvenation of the genre, beckoning thoughts of Run-DMC, Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul.

The Cool Kids, a duo comprising of Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish, have garnered a notable buzz in the rap and indie music communities, having played the Pitchfork Festival and had their music on Entourage and in NBA 2K9. Tracks like “88,” “What It Is,” and “Bassment Party” help to establish the EP as strong throwback to the days when rap was more about a good time and less about jail time. The EP is a bit laden with content regarding the coolness of the Cool Kids, but the bragging is done using humour, not threats. Though not a masterpiece, The Bake Sale is a solid effort, with the two young emcee’s showing much promise, and should help to get any current or former rap fans grooving to their party beats and slick lyrics.
