The wheel of culture
Music is by far the most popular thing in the world. It is in most cases the bridge connecting one human to another; no matter what the difference, people can always come together over good tunes. This is the power music holds over our souls, it can inspire us to open our minds and hearts to the unknown and experience something great. Every generation has had a unique sound that captured the Zeitgeist of their time. The Baby Boomers had the guitar of Jimi Hendrix, the poetry of Bob Dylan and the voice of the man in black, Johnny Cash. My parents will remember long nights listening to Al Green LPs or watching KC & the Sunshine Band on TV. I myself am lucky enough to have been around for the Grunge movement.
Point being, every decade has had something important to say with their music. Certain bands have been able to transcend space and time with their songs and in the age of technology we as listeners are able to go back and experience other generations. This is why each issue I will come up with a list of ten great songs from one great year. Here’s how it works: I have made a wheel with different years and decades on it, I will give it a spin and gather songs from whichever year it lands on. Sound simple enough? Well get set kids, because our first stop in our musical time machine is 1985 – A very exciting time for music and fashion. You can check these songs out on YouTube, or you could always buy them on iTunes (trust me, they’re worth a buck).
