Vision 20/20: Building the future

February 9, 2006

Trinity is growing. New profs, new classes, and a new president.

The land on the other side of Glover across from TWU is going to be part of a new “University District.” The town is going to be partnering with our school and deciding what sort of buildings will go on that land. If you were in charge of constructing the next three buildings on this campus, what would they be?

Some of the proposed ideas are: a new Media and Fine arts building, another collegium, a better library, a stadium, more parking, more classrooms, more offices, a swimming pool, and more. What would you choose, and why?

Now you go...

Trinity Western needs to focus on basic infrastructure. A world class university begins with world class professors therefore Trinity ought to consider buildings that might entice additional professors in all fields especially the sciences. Along with attracting world class educators Trinity needs to consider how to retain academic excellence. Trinity Western University needs to consider an additional building for studies (ie. Library). Rigorous academic research can only be completed proficiently when the resources are available to make it happen. The library stands in dismal comparison to other schools that have university standing and are attended at a fraction of the cost of TWU. When I started to get serious about my studies most of my research had to be completed either at SFU or UBC. I think if one is spending top dollar on their education one ought to have top dollar facilities.

Trinity is the only christian liberal arts university in Canada. Trinity sets the bar for how society percieves christian thinking and focus. Trinity must work toward an education that is competitive with top secular universities and mold students that will compete with the best in the work world. It is my hope that Trinity Western makes decisions with its finite resources that work toward sending out such competitive persons.

    Good Luck,

I take it that Mike will be providing the funds for this, am I correct? It would sure be nice to have world-class facilities (particularly if a contractor could be found to build them on time and on budget), but I’d say we need more than calls for buildings, we need actual $’s before anything can move forward. I think the sentiment is one shared by all at TWU but the reality faced by our school’s administration is that the finite resources mentioned above are really actually pretty finite.

    My Dream TWU

    - Beautiful buildings, all matching, in classical architecture

    - More academic-looking website, with a proud, accurate fact sheet and beautiful virtual tour links on the front page

    - Representation in Macleans and US News university rankings
[Macleans does not recognize TWU because of its distinctly evangelical mission, but university-ranking magazines in the US rank Christian schools alongside their secular and non-denominational private counterparts…Macleans should follow suit. As for US News magazine, while it is a US magazine, it does include a profile of TWU in its “unranked international schools” section, because it is so close and because of the percentage of US students who go here. I would like TWU to be included in the rankings, as we are part of the CCCU, and some other member institutions proudly display that they are “the only university in the CCCU to achieve…(certain recognitions)” when, if TWU were in the rankings, this would not be the case. TWU is statistically better than virtually ALL of the other CCCU schools and it would be nice for us to be given the chance to be included in those rankings to prove this!]

    - A Political Philosophy stream of the POLS major

    - A Great Books course(s)

    - A Grand Library/reading room…aesthetically and architecturally conducive to inspiration and higher learning…with a million volumes

    - The new Media/Fine Arts building, with a dark room, and an art gallery

    - Friendly enrolment services people

    - A real theatre, with a curtain

    - A competitive cheerleading squad

    - Greater academic reputation (this comes from better advertising, especially among prep schools in the US, as we are great already!)

I must agree with Lauren on just about everything. Including the dark room. Although…a cheerleading squad?

    Cheerleaders would be rad.

Got something to say?
