Intramural leagues kicked off the week after Canadian Thanksgiving and have been going strong. Due to limited gym time, the league had to start later than usual this year. But they’re up and running with a great turn out!

Scotty Erickson, Rec Services basketball coordinator, takes the gym by storm on Monday nights from 9pm-12am. There are a record number of 25 teams (22 mens, 3 womens) that have shown up to shoot hoops this year. With names like “Pathological Ballers” and “The Jigglers” there is bound to be some tight competition! Come check out the action—it’s never too late to join.

Intramural volleyball has experienced so much success this year that Sunday evenings had to be added to the usual Wednesday nights. This timeslot conflicts with Sunday Night Alive, but because of the schedule, teams should only be playing in that timeslot once. The volleyball coordinator, Miss Christina Hofmann , has been overwhelmed with the number of players coming out. As a result, Intramural Volleyball Coordinator Johnny Kotanen has taken over the supervision of Sunday evenings. Unfortunately, many teams have proven to be uncommitted and have caused numerous forfeits so far this season. Schedules have been altered to hopefully prevent frustration. The famous rivalry between Paul Berg’s “Legacy” and Johnny K’s “The Awesome” is continued. The Awesome is favored to win this year, but their recent loss to Legacy has shaken their confidence. The Choffy Cup can only be awarded to one team…

Indoor soccer takes up the most gym time in the league of intramurals. Sarah Scheer, a third year Rec Services Assistant, organizes the Tuesday and Thursday evening sport. Rec Services Assistant Keith Reed comments, “Why is there so much anticipation for the Fall 2005 season? It’s probably due to the fact that the youngsters will be attempting to knock off their older counterparts. This season is full of seasoned veterans due to the return of several indoor teams, but the raging rookies will be ready to make a name for themselves.” Numbers were expected to be lower for soccer this year as a result of the rising Titans Soccer Club teams (both men’s and women’s), but Trinity students just keep on coming out to kick it around. “Gomer’s Gophers” is returning for yet another intense season, but as Keith points out, they’ve got young blood competing for the championship.

But really, through all this zealous competition, it just comes down to the fun of the game. When asked for comment, Rec Services Director Dale Baumgartner, wants students to remember the true theme, “Rec Services: A great way to meet friends.” I’m sure he would agree with Muhammad Ali when he said, “Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them — a desire, a dream, a vision.” Now, get out there and be a champion.

Play-offs begin the week of November 28, 2005.
