Derek Webb: I don’t listen to a lot of new records. I listen to a lot of old records. I love Bob Dylan and I love The Beatles. Until someone who is making music now can make me a record that is as good as those older records I just don’t have a real good reason to stop listening to those. I’m a huge Wilco fan. They are arguably the best American rock ’n’ roll band. Thom York of Radiohead just put out a solo album called The Eraser. I’ve never been into Radiohead but this record really freaked me out—totally inspirational. And then thirdly, there’s this singer/songwriter from the U.K., Lily Allen, who is this mash-up of reggae, and hip-hop. It’s really fun—straight-up pop music.

Reading Shakespeare can be difficult, but watching it shouldn’t be. And Theatre at TWU’s production of The Taming of the Shrew is no exception, as it takes the play’s mistaken identities and miscommunication blunders and spices them up with cross-dressing.
The story is familiar, at least to some extent, to anyone who has ever seen the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. Bianca is known for her beauty, but her older sister Kate is known for her cutting tongue, and their over protective father (or in this production, their mother) will not let Bianca marry until Kate has. But where 10 Things ended, TWU’s production antes up with cross-dressing, dancing, and the return of Heath Ledger. Wait. No, sorry—it’s just John Voth.

The Everyday genius

You know how almost everyone has a book that changed their life? Or at least they say so, in the hyperbolic fashion that has become so popular these days? Well, this is the book that changed mine. It was my introduction to alternative learning theories and what made me passionate about education. It’s an eye-opening look at how our small, unintended negative actions can influence people’s learning and outlook on life. If you’re trying to be a positive influence on people, I would suggest reading this book.

Mew serves up sound with a side of hummus and fried pita chips. If this song doesn’t awaken the equestrian inside of you, you might as well pick up the new Fall Out Boy album because you are not allowed to listen to good music.
Annuals - “Brother”
I never had a brother. The Make A Wish Foundation contacted this North Carolina band and asked them to write a song about brothers; that made my greatest wish come true. It’s impossible not to desire to move mountains after listening to this song.

Let me talk about an experience that took place on a cloudy Monday evening during reading break.
But first, let me give some background. When I was growing up, I was surrounded by my mother’s love of Van Morrison’s music. As a young teenager, I began to share her love, and songs such as “Real Real Gone,” “Moondance,” and, of course, “Brown Eyed Girl” found firm hold within my soul.
So when I heard that Morrison was coming to town this February, I jumped at the chance to see him live. To say that I had high expectations for this concert would be a gross understatement; I had been ready for the concert for as long as I can remember.

After the unforeseen success of their self-titled, self-released debut, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s sophomore effort, Some Loud Thunder has a lot to live up to. This in mind, the album’s first track, “Some Loud Thunder,” leaves the listener confused and kind of hurt. No, your speakers aren’t broken and your CD wasn’t burned improperly. That crackling static and overbearing distortion is supposed to be there. Fortunately, this approach is lost after the first track and the CYHSY that you love and remember returns in style.
