Students question feasibility of new program
In News, Volume 12 Issue 7 @ 9:14 AM

By Lauren Thompson

Trinity Western University students will now have to think twice before throwing anything away: as of January 1, a number of items were banned from Metro Vancouver garbage bins as part of the region’s Zero Waste Challenge.

Banned items include corrugated cardboard, newsprint, office paper, pharmaceuticals and all beverage containers excluding milk.

TWU, along with all other residents and businesses in the Metro Vancouver area, will be fined if contraband items are found in general waste receptacles.

Honest dialogue with Maria Bamford
In Frames, Volume 12 Issue 7 @ 9:13 AM

By Joshua Gregg

Maria Bamford is a stand-up comedian, currently living in L.A. Her routines focus on “High voice, low voice” impressions of her family members, and wittily constructed social commentaries. She has also done a lot of voiceover work and has appeared in various movies including Lucky Numbers with John Travolta. This interview was a short online dialogue between Maria B. and Frames editor Josh Gregg.

Mars’ Hill: Talk about your roots in comedy—what was it like stepping into the industry?

Contract issues forced delays in construction

Renovations on the Lower Caf have yet to be finished, as is evidenced by the current state of the construction site. It was hoped that the project would be completed by finals week of the previous semester, but issues of contract agreement between Trinity Western University and food provider Sodexho delayed the process, according to director of University Enterprises Scott Henderson.

“The [contract] agreement with Sodexho didn’t get signed until the beginning of November,” said Henderson, noting that the two offices had to send the contract back-and-forth rather than completing it in one seating.

Trinity Western University students smoke. Cigarette packs and butts litter the Back 40. Interviewing several smokers, I have learned that security asks students who smoke simply to do it more discreetly than quit altogether in accordance with the Community Standards. “Once I was asked for a light by a security guard,” one student comments, “and then told me that I just need to go further into the Back 40.”

Mitt Romney has advantages - it's time for him to show it
In Issues & Ideas, Volume 12 Issue 7 @ 9:10 AM

By Joshua Duvauchelle

Mitt Romney, contender for the U.S. presidency, is in the middle of a political maelstrom. Can Romney keep his bid for the Republican nomination alive in the face of a series of losses in the U.S. primaries? He faces more than a dozen competitors in the United States’ biggest election; Fortune magazine calculates that the candidates will spend a collective $3 billion by the time campaigning ends.

Money isn’t an issue for Romney. White and wealthy—a stereotype, perhaps, of Republicans but hardly limited to the reds (Hillary Clinton raised over $100 million last year)—Romney has enough greenbacks to fund his campaign. Instead, his problem lies in the Republican Party’s own convoluted race.

Players shocked and disappointed by loss
In News, Volume 12 Issue 7 @ 9:09 AM

By Linette Schut

It was just another practice for the Trinity Western University men’s basketball team on December 13, 2007, until their head coach did not show up to lead them. After a practice led by their assistant coaches, the team found out that Stan Peters had been fired as their head coach, effective immediately.

Right: Stan Peters [UComm]

“It was a complete shock,” said a member of the basketball team, who wished to remain anonymous. “There wasn’t much time to comprehend [what had happened.]”

One member of the coaching staff resigned immediately in support of Peters.

Eight years of regrets in the Bush Administration
In Issues & Ideas, Volume 12 Issue 7 @ 9:08 AM

By Graeme Esau

As the campaigns for the United States presidency are heating up, we are reminded that George W. Bush’s reign as president is nearing an end. While in power, Bush’s failures occurred in regulation. I will highlight a few, doing little justice to his numerous accounts of incompetence.

The University of Regina’s volleyball teams will be going home winless after visiting both the Spartan men and women this past weekend.

The Spartans men, who are now 4-4 since the Christmas break, halted a two game losing skid with back-to-back home victories over the lowly Cougars. Up to this point, the Cougars managed to accumulate just one win this season.
