Trinity Western University has recently announced that Ronald W. Toews has been appointed to the combined position of Principal for ACTS Seminaries and Associate Vice President of Graduate Theological Studies.

In 2002, Toews began working as Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies at the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary of ACTS at Trinity Western University, where he has taught over 25 courses at the graduate level.

“Dr. Toews brings a wealth of leadership and consulting experience to the Graduate School of Theological Studies/ACTS during this time of transition and planning. His organizational insights will help us to build stronger University and Seminary ties and inform our progress toward the adoption of policy governance,” said Provost Dennis Jameson.

For more than 85 years the American College Health Association (ACHA) has been an advocate and leadership organization for college and university health. Trinity Western University joined the ACHA in the fall of 2006 in order to better understand and serve the health needs of our students. The National College Health Assessment (NCHA) survey is one tool that the ACHA uses to accomplish this task.

The NCHA is a nationally recognized research survey that assists in collecting precise data about our students’ habits, behaviors, and perceptions on a wide range of health issues. In spring 2007 TWU participated in the NCHA survey by conducting a randomized survey of 1500 students. Both married and single students were included.

In 1948, biology professor Alfred Kinsey released his book Sexual Behavior in the Human Male—a lengthy study on the sexual practices of men. Kinsey’s book caused an uproar in American society. A professor at the Indiana University, Kinsey was the subject of several objections as to the quality of his research, the results of his findings and, most significantly, the moral grounds of what became known as the Kinsey Reports. However, regardless of the grounds on which Kinsey did his research, he achieved something revolutionary: bringing the issue of sexuality to the surface of a society that largely ignored it.

York University to offer transgendered housing

TORONTO (CUP) - The Centre for Student Community and Leadership Development and the SexGen York Committee at York University will soon offer a gender-neutral residence, one of the first in Canada.

The facility, which hopes to be open for students enrolled in the 2008-2009 academic year, will house students in a six-bedroom suite, equipped with its own washroom. “The biggest single rate of risk of assault for female to male trans people [occurs in] bathrooms or change rooms,” said Lynette Dubois, a member of The Transgendered, Bisexual, Lesbian and Gay Association at York (TBLGAY). The suite will be provided for students whose “physical bodies do not match their gender identity,” explained Michael Gilbert, a professor at York University and chair of the SexGen York Committee.

Jared: I was a triple jumper in track and field. I also played basketball in junior high, but got cut in grade nine and never played again. In addition, I played football in high school, but I ended up tearing my ACL the day before the first game of the season in grade 12.

MH: Which is more of a sport, billiards or NASCAR?

Spartans and WolfPack split

The Spartan men’s basketball team was in Kamloops, BC last weekend to take on the winless Thompson Rivers University WolfPack basketball squad. In their first game, TWU seemed to be in pretty good shape after closing out the second quarter with a 45-28 advantage. However, a very determined TRU’s squad shocked the Spartans, rallying to defeat the Spartans 89-85. Luke Robinson led the way for TWU with 25 points.

The home field stands were packed to see their Trinity Western University Spartans in both of their Canada West Playoff matches. On November 2, the Spartans took on the fourth seed University of Alberta Golden Bears, before meeting the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in the Canada West final.

Although they were the CIS defending champions, the Golden Bears had no chance against the tough Spartans team this time around. Starting off the scoring for TWU was Nathan Pogue, who scored within the first 10 minutes off a corner kick from Adrian Kekec. Pogue later added to the score by notching two more goals at the 44 and 68 minute marks of play.
