As of April 30, 2005, $32,500 remained unspent in the 2004-2005 Trinity Western Student Association (TWUSA) budget. This money will be carried into the 2005-2006 budget, said Greg Norris, Vice President for Finance.

Norris said a higher than expected revenue from the Cube, a used book store service run by Student Council, was part of the reason for the surplus. Council charges a $1-5 handling fee for each book sold.

Some expenditures that council had budgeted for did not happen, contributing to the excess cash. For example, Sophomore Representative Jeff Dunkin budgeted $700 for a fire-pit that did not occur because it was not approved by administration.

Ron Kuehl was appointed to Trinity Western University’s President’s Cabinet this August as Vice President for External Relations. Kuehl returns to TWU after spending two years as Senior Director of Development and External Relations at Canuck Place, which is a children’s hospice in Vancouver.

In his new role Kuehl will oversee the areas of fundraising, communications, alumni, and business development programs.

“I’m confident that Ron’s expertise, experience, and deep commitment to the mission of Trinity Western will infuse fresh energy into our fund raising and external relations efforts,” wrote President Snider in an all-campus e-mail.

Last year Facility Services employed 15 students for general maintenance; this year, it will employ none.

Director of Facility Services Paul Johnston confirmed that four or five full time maintenance workers were also laid off.

“Organizations go through hard times,” said Johnston, “and we’re in this little challenge right now. Every challenge is an opportunity to do things in a different way.”

Johnston said that this decision was made because of budget numbers, but was not at liberty to say how much money these cuts represented.
