They’re oddly frozen in action. Guns out, hands up, grenades in mid-throw, the men at my elbow are forever waging a static war. The handful of dark green toy soldiers rally around a tiny plastic Canadian flag in a way I have seen few men do. They line up on the side table, a tiny formation trapped on one side by the dense foliage
printed on the cardboard wall of the Kleenex box, hemmed in on the other by a borrowed edition of E.B. White’s essays. The boldest soldier is about to charge out of the trench, scaling the dictionary that dwarfs him.

Upon hearing In Between Dreams, the words of Derek Zoolander came to mind: “Is there more to life than being really really really ridiculously good looking?” Although he is not quite as shallow as Derek Zoolander, pretty boy, beach bum Jack Johnson fails to outdo Brushfire Fairytales and On and On with In Between Dreams. While a couple tracks on his newest album have the potential to make it as successful radio singles (”Never Know” and “Good People”), as a whole, it fails as a show stopper.

Much like an island of sirens, Eisley draws my ears, heart, and mind closer and closer with the irresistible charm of their music. Three sisters, a brother, and a best friend come together to create Eisley, a one of a kind band that delves into the depths of imagination and creativity. Growing up in a large family, they learned how to play instruments in their Vineyard church’s worship team.

Trinity Western University has a lot to be proud of this year. Not only did our women’s soccer team secure our first CIS title, but our men’s volleyball team played an unbelievable, televised match against the University of Alberta for the Championship title. The U of A was not expecting the Spartans, who showed up to play them on Sunday, March 7. They were likely expecting to play three quick games and win the title, but, instead, they faced five long battles, all of which were exciting enough to keep the crowd cheering after each point.

Randy Radney

Professor of Linguistics

Dr. Radney teaches a number of philosophy and linguistics classes at TWU. However, his knowledge of languages and how they work extends beyond the classroom and into the Nemiah Valley of northern BC. In 1984, Radney and his wife Mary began living with a First Nations community, the Xeni Gwet’in. Their goal: train indigenous people in Biblical translation and curriculum development for a native educational system. They ended up staying for a decade, the first six years of which were spent simply learning the language and becoming a part of the community.

Senior Panic is like dating a girl with one leg. You can pretend it won’t get to you, but it will, and that’s just the way it is. So in the midst of Spring Fever, I found this girl that I totally like, and she likes me too. We want to start dating, but things won’t be official until I call her dad (who is likely a gun-owner) and ask his permission. What should/shouldn’t I say to her dad?

MATTHEW THIESSEN GRADUATED FROM AN OXFORD MASTER’S PROGRAM LAST YEAR, having attended on a full ride scholarship. His thesis won the “Best Dissertation” prize for 2004. He’s going on to pursue his Ph.D. at Duke University on another full-ride scholarship, this time with a living allowance added on top. Thiessen is clearly a top-shelf academic, and he earned his first M.A., in Biblical Studies, right here at Trinity Western University. Lest you think him an anomaly, the winner of the previous year’s Oxford thesis prize was another Trinity grad, Dorothy Peters.
