Recently someone, friend or foe, brought to my attention the power of metaphor. As we all know, “metaphor” is French for “crap.” Sadly, most people at this godly university don’t know French, so I have decided to step out and give everyone a lesson in linguistics. So off we go, on a trip, way up there, in the stars, to the land, the street of metaphor.
In the beginning was the metaphor, and everywhere we looked all we saw was the metaphor. And we loved the metaphor, and we hugged the metaphor, and we worshipped the metaphor, for the metaphor smelled better than potpourri, and the metaphor was nicer than a fairy, and the metaphor could sing better than ol’ Frankie.

Hello, sweet brothers ‘n’ sisters in His mighty Name.
I reckon y’all are wonderin’ what’s been goin’ on with the court trial I jawed about last time. Well, like I said before, my new neighbours sued me for property damage. Personally, I reckon they oughtta be more worried about damage to their eternal souls for goin’ up against a pastor – it ain’t Christian, you know?
‘Course, neither are they.
Well, the court hearin’ was last week. When I walked into the courthouse, one o’ my neighbour’s kinfolk (a li’l old lady) stopped me and looked all sad. She asked me, “Why would you do that to them?”

Trinity Western University has always prided itself on its international community. But though its 358 international students come from many different nations, there is one country few thought would ever be represented on campus: North Korea.
That will change this spring, as the university welcomes six students from the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK; North Korea) to study English.
The students, all Korean English teachers, will be arriving some time in early March, depending on when their visas come through. For about six weeks, they will be taking special courses taught by TESOL and Linguistics professors Phil Goertzen and Dave Lindsay, and grad student Hannah Visser.

According to Trinity Western University alums, the post-TWU experience is one mixed with special challenges and unexpected turns.
TWU alumni recently spent an evening dialoguing with students at the Ramada Plaza in Abbotsford. The event, called “Marketing U,” was held on Feb. 6 and featured a panel of alumni, including two keynote speakers, financial advisor Paul Lermitte and author Sam Beckford.
Hosted by the Alumni Department, the evening was meant to show students what they have to look forward to upon graduation. Without downplaying the more daunting aspects of post-university life, the panel of speakers expressed mostly positive sentiments about their post-grad experiences.

This spring, Trinity Western University’s English Department will be hosting “Though a Glass Darkly: Suffering, the Sacred, and the Sublime.” This conference on Christianity and literature will take place on May 10-12.
The conference will be hosted in conjunction with The Conference on Christianity and Literature. It will feature approximately 80 guest lecturers including five keynote speakers, making it one of the largest of its kind ever hosted at TWU.
Dr. Richard Kearney of Boston College is one well-known intellectual who will be acting as a keynote speaker. Author of more than 20 books on European philosophy, Kearney is “one of the most significant philosophers of our lifetime,” said Dr. Holly Nelson, who is organizing the conference along with Prof. Jennifer Doede.

The possibility of a student representative on Trinity Western University’s Board of Governors may not be too far off in the future, as the board seeks to conclude a review of its governance structure by early fall 2007.
Most recently, the board met with TWU president Dr. Jonathan Raymond, members of the President’s Cabinet, and representatives from the student, staff, and faculty associations, for a training workshop on Carver Policy Governance.
According to its website, the Carver model is “designed to empower boards of directors to fulfill their obligation of accountability for the organizations they govern.”

The debate over religion and free speech has erupted on YouTube. Nick Gisburne, an atheist on YouTube, recently published a video entitled “Islamic Teachings: Cruelty From the Qur’an.” YouTube staff took down the video, citing its “inappropriate nature,” and both of Gisburne’s YouTube accounts were permanently disabled.
This situation has provided an opportunity to examine the implications of “new media” for the old conflict between religious freedom and freedom of speech. It also shows us the need to articulate a space on the internet for the public good, and how in the absence of any real constitution, basic human decency can go a long way.

VICTORIA (CUP) — Critically examining several sources sounds like something from an essay outline. But outside the classroom, we must do this to get an informed idea of global politics. A recent CNN broadcast on Iran’s nuclear ambition is a good example of how mainstream media shows only part of the story.
Early in January, a senior Iranian legislator announced that Iran had begun to install 3,000 new centrifuges, devices used in enriching uranium to produce nuclear power. That’s up from the 350 they’d been running since April last year.
