In an effort to help revive a dwindling enrolment rate at Trinity Western University, new President Dr. Jonathan Raymond dismissed Vice President for Enrolment Management Jeff Suderman and hired an outside consultant to review the university’s recruitment strategies.
The decision, made almost immediately after Raymond stepped into his new role, was to help bring the school back to a “firm footing fiscally,” the president noted in an email sent to staff during the summer.
Raymond decided that enrolment management was in need of a “critical turn around” as TWU’s student body has been slowly depleting over the last couple of years. With Suderman gone, Raymond closed the VP position, splitting the role’s duties between the academic and external relations departments.

Trinity Western University’s resident housing is getting a makeover this year.
Douglas Hall, traditionally an all-male-on-campus residence, is now home to a dorm of undergrad women, most of them majoring in education.
Bethany Tyler, the RA of the girls’ dorm, said she had some initial misgivings about a lack of diversity in the new living arrangements. She noted that Trinity’s rich liberal arts tradition is one of its strong points, and exposure to a variety of different fields should be celebrated.

Trinity Western University is not only welcoming a new president’s wife this school year, but it is also gaining a new professor as Irene Raymond steps into the classroom to teach introductory Spanish.
Raymond, who holds an MA, has been teaching since she was 21, only taking time out to raise her two children. She is eager to continue this role on the TWU campus.
“Teaching [beginner] Spanish is fun, not work,” she shared, noting how exciting it is to see students bond over the elementary ideas of a new language. Raymond views herself as a “perpetual student of the language,” learning alongside the students she teaches.

Changes are already taking place on the Trinity Western University Student Association this year as Executive Assistant Melanie Spaulding officially resigned last week.
Spaulding, who graduated last spring, only needs two classes to earn her degree in Human Services, while TWUSA requires a minimum of nine semester hours to be a member of Student Council. Spaulding appealed to the TWUSA Senate, arguing that the lab science class she was taking, which requires three extra hours per week in class, fulfilled the principle behind the rule. Unfortunately, her appeal was denied.

Over the next five years, Dr. Jens Zimmermann and Trinity Western University will receive $500 000 from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), to aid Zimmermann in his research of religion and society.
“It’s a dream come true,” said Zimmermann, who was awarded the SSHRC Canada Research Chair in religion, interpretation, and culture this July.
Explaining his area of study in simple terms, Zimmermann said he is “looking at the role of religion and the comeback of religion in academia and pop culture.”
