But is it for the best?
In 13, 4, From the Editor @ 5:38 PM

Change happens everyday – but sometimes big changes don’t seem to follow a slow and steady philosophy.

This year is an example: I have a new president, new house and new brother-in-law. I’m graduating soon, then moving for the fourth time in four years. It’s exhausting keeping up with it all.

Trinity Western University is not immune to the same cycles of change. The extreme turnaround of universities – with an almost completely new population every four years – opens the door for differences in attitude, atmosphere and expectations.

New student fee could ease facility problems, cost students

When Trinity Western University won the bid to host women’s soccer Nationals for Canadian Intervarsity Sport this year, changes had to be made. The anticipation of national media presence and elite players and coaches coming to campus brings promise of increased attention to the university, said dean of human kinetics Blair Whitmarsh.

But hosting Nationals also brings the need for sacrifices, mostly notably in field usage. Among others, Dale Baumgartner, director of Recreation Services, has felt the squeeze.

“Three weeks after [dorm football began], we were informed that we couldn’t use the south field. We had to restart on the third field,” he said.

In 2008 there have been only four reported accidents on the Trinity Western University campus, though the operative word is “reported.” Reports for incidents such as collisions are handled through the campus Security office.

Admissions happy with first event’s turnout

Prospective students and their families visited the Trinity Western University campus on Oct. 24 and 25 for the first Preview Weekend of the year. The large groups of people along with many signs and uniformed Admissions staff were hard to miss.

The number of prospective students appeared to be lower than last year, but that may be due to the fact that the huge turnout for spring Preview Weekends is the current comparison.

“With this Preview Weekend, we’re just getting our feet wet for the year,” said Melissa Reed, associate director of admissions. “Come spring, we’ll get geared up for bigger numbers.”

Trinity Western University normally gives students an additional day off from classes to link the Remembrance Day holiday with a weekend. Nov. 11, 2009, however, falls on a Wednesday.

Rather than cancel two days of classes to create a five-day break including Remembrance Day, the Undergraduate Academic Council (UAC) has decided not to schedule fall reading break for 2009-10.

Dr. Bob Wood, the vice provost at TWU and member of the UAC, said that the council was unanimous in this decision.

Breast Cancer Awareness
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but just because the month is almost over doesn’t mean the efforts will end. The call for university sports teams across Canada to fundraise for breast cancer, an initiative started by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), raised over $50,000 last year.
