GET OUT OF THE DORMS AND INTO THE FLOW

September 20, 2006

Seth Oglesby

You know the feeling. Your dorm has gone out to Tim Horton’s again and, unwillingly, you decide to go along. You wonder if this is all there is to university life as you start downing Timbits for the third time this week. The answer to this monotony, my friends, can be found right here on campus. There is a plethora of Trinity Western University Student Association (TWUSA) clubs available for the stir-crazy student. The interests of these clubs range from politics to extreme sports, so no matter what your hobby is, there is a club for you.

Currently there are twenty plus clubs on campus and many more in the works. Many of these clubs have descriptions and contact information on the TWUSA website, http://www.twusa.ca/clubs. The website also tells you how to start a new club should you find that your interests are not represented by any of the clubs already in existence.

Don’t fall into a pattern of mindless activity. Join a club and get active in your community. I recommend the following clubs.

1. Mountain Riders Discipleship (MRD)

Leader: Bjorn Bulthuis

Contact: bjorn.bulthuis@agape.twu.ca; http://mrd.twusa.ca/

When: Thursday night at 9pm in the TWUSA office.

Description:
“The purpose of MRD is to connect and disciple skateboarders and snowboarders at TWU. We have weekly meetings and frequent off-campus events. We are geared towards boarders, but anyone is welcome to just come and meet some new people. Snake Pit, our weekly meeting, is where we come together to pray for each other, worship together, and just to have fun. We have plans for a skate park tour, Jib Jams, and waxing parties for the upcoming snow season.”

2. Trinity Western Outdoor Club (TWOC)

Leaders: Bonnie Chalmers and Jessica Rispin

Contact: rockntwoc@yahoo.ca

When: Various events (rafting, rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, and snow camping) throughout the semester.

Description:
“The Trinity Western Outdoor Club wants to give students the opportunity to experience God’s creation with others in hopes of challenging people physically and spiritually. Experience and skill level are of little concern because we welcome anyone with a heart for adventure. You don’t have to be into extreme sports, just willing to try something new. Expect to have an amazing time with other crazy adventurers as we live life to the fullest.”

3. International Social Justice Club (ISJC)

Leader: Ashley Crozier

Contact: acrozier3@yahoo.ca

When: Various events (guest speakers, movie nights and globally-themed projects) throughout the semester.

Description:
“The purpose of the International Social Justice Club is to create awareness about social injustice around the world while providing students with opportunities to make a difference. People passionate about social justice or just interested in learning more about social injustice issues on a global level are welcome to join.”

4. TWU Young Conservatives Club

Leader: Ryan Christison

Contact: twuconservatives@gmail.com

When: Various events throughout the semester.

Description:
“The TWU Young Conservatives Club is set up to promote the policies of the federal conservative party on the TWU campus by means of discussions of policy, politics, and the people involved. Anyone who is looking for opportunities to become politically involved or just politically aware is invited to join us as we discuss current politics [in Ottawa], prepare for the next election, and meet MPs.”

Now you go...
