Dear amazing advice givers,

I’ve been going to TWU for a year now and I’ve always struggled with the non-drinking policy here. Not to say that I’m an alcoholic or anything, but I do like to have a drink every once in a while. But I’ve found that I’m torn between my own sense of right and wrong and with TWU’s policy on drinking. How can I reconcile these differences? And am I doing wrong if I were to have an occasional drink every so often?

Dear droll,

You’ve touched upon an issue that has plagued this fine institution since its inception. TWU is known from all corners of North America for its particular set of rules. To drink or not to drink, that is the question. And might the answer be just as simple? Likely not, for what you have here is what some might call an “ethical dilemma.” Since you have chosen to follow the path of academia (or at least pretend to, because we all know you likely came here to enter into the throes of marital safety), you must recall that period of yore when this institute of higher learning sent you a variety of papers for you to dole out your John Hancock upon. However, since you obviously did not muse upon their purpose, you have inadvertently signed over the next four years to living a life of celibacy, abstaining from fermented beverages and abstinence.

I have so far deliberately attempted to not answer your queries. This has been done more to protect myself, as one cannot accurately detail the specifics of one’s own moral and ethical stances. Yes, this is likely a post-modern thought, but who cares? Anyone? Good, because you probably should have realized you signed that contract and either must live by it or not commit such a folly as to advertise that you “may or may not” allow the smooth taste of liquor pass your lips.

Final thoughts: make up your own mind! Like an advice columnist is going to be able to change how you think about this.

Dear friend,

Well young one, ethical dilemmas are rarely to be taken lightly. As my counterpart has undoubtedly resorted to hurling insults and generally being as coy and ambivalent as possible, I on the other hand will attempt to guide you through this troubling dilemma.

Now on to business; the drinking policy at this school has been at times one of the most hotly contested issues facing the community. Many people have taken exception to the fact that they are apparently prohibited from engaging in any sort of alcohol consumption while they attend to their studies at TWU. However, a large percentage of students came to TWU for exactly that reason; they craved a safe and dry environment, but these differing opinions have brought a level of contention between people. One that is likely not to be resolved without some people’s sensibilities being threatened.

What sort of advice can I offer? Well, thus far you have chosen to attend this academic institution, and at one point were undoubtedly informed of the policies that you would be required to live under while in attendance. Technically by drinking you are violating that policy, but even the most ardent supporter of one policy is likely to break another just as easily. So I would offer that you not become so down upon yourself, because if we are speaking in a strictly technical sense, swearing of any sort is disallowed here, but the amount of explicit language unleashed on this campus would make even the least virgin of ears blush. Ultimately in the end, the choice is yours and no one but you can decide on your ethical decisions. Good luck my friend!
