TWUSA hosts annual Neighbourhood Exhibition
In Community, Volume 12 Issue 7 @ 9:02 AM

By Gabby Labastida

Trinity Western University Student Association hosts the TWUSA Neighbourhood Exhibit (TNE) to present the student body with the various clubs and programs that are available to them. Through TWUSA, these clubs are able to put on various events and activities that have the potential to enable community building and friendship, but also have the potential to challenge and stretch students in new and exciting ways. According to Kenji Skulstad, TWUSA Vice President of Academics, this is one of the best ways that students are able to hear about and advocate various issues and concerns across our community, student body and world. Here are a few of the featured clubs at the TNE this year:

Aristotle’s 7th Element

Love to act and perform? Aristotle’s 7th Element (A7E) is the club for you. This club focuses on pursuing excellence in a fun and exciting way. A7E is also involved in hosting events such as workshops, night galas and an auction involving the 11:07 actors. This group meets once a week to plan and discuss events and is a tight knit group of individuals looking to express and refine their talent. To join this group, contact President of A7E Jordi Montes.

A Rocha TWU

If you care about God’s creation, the environment and sustainability, A Rocha is your club. This club is an active force that focuses on caring for creation. They are partnered with A Rocha, an international organization concerned with conserving the environment and caring for God’s creation. Through volunteer work in stream restoration, composting and dinner meetings once a month, members can be part of restoring creation and meeting passionate individuals ready to make a difference. For more information contact Patricia Buhler.

Trinity Western Art Association (TWART)

Are you passionate about current artists? Want to get to know other art students at TWU? TWART is here to satisfy your passion. This club focuses on advocating for the Arts and planning art-related events. TWART members also travel to Vancouver to visit various art galleries and stay current on contemporary artists. Every Thursday night at 8 p.m. the club hosts open studio night in the art studio in RNT, where you can come and work on art homework, and get to know other art students. If you are free January 23 at 5:15 p.m. then come out to the art studio for a potluck and find out more about TWART. Contact Alysha Creighton for more information.

The Helping Hands

Like the name suggests, this club is here to help others. Through a focus on healthy living and well-being, students will encounter issues of poverty, advocacy and environmentalism and get to know fellow students through vegetarian potlucks and various other events. Meetings are on Mondays at 1:30 p.m. in the TWUSA office. If you love vegetarian food and good company, then schedule these three potlucks in your agenda: January 27, February 17 and March 16 at 1:30 p.m. Love to sleep? Then why not participate in the Olympic Clock Sleep Out on February 10. For more information contact Krista West.

TWU Conservative Club

Politics at its finest. Speakers including local members of parliament such as Ralph Kline, Stockwell Day and Monte Solberg are scheduled to speak throughout this semester. You will also have the chance to volunteer with campaigns during provincial and the upcoming federal election, and be immersed in the world of politics where you may learn and participate in our country’s changing political structure. If you are interested contact Joshua Peters.

Future Teacher’s Society (FTS)

The FTS is involved with TWUSA and plans events for education students in order to build community. Events include guest speakers, a “parents’ night out” involving babysitting faculty’s children for special occasions and bringing forth ideas to serve education students and the community. A TWU Alum will be speaking this semester to education students about his experience opening schools in Rwanda. For more information contact Laura Mitchell.

TWU Badminton Club

If you love badminton, then come out every Sunday afternoon from 3:00 - 6:00 PM to see the shuttlecocks fly! The club has officially started but there is still time to join and become a part of this fun and active group. It’s a place to exercise and build relationships with other students, faculty, alumni and non-students. If you have any questions, contact James Huang.
