Cruising to connect

In September 2006, Trinity Western University alumni and guest lecturers will sail on a Carnival cruise ship through the Mexican Riviera to renew friendships and have some fun by engaging in the Lifelong Learning series.

“The purpose of this trip is connecting, communicating, and celebrating,” said Inga Warnock, Director of Planned Giving.
A large portion of the alumni that will be attending are those who graduated while Dr. Cal Hanson was TWU’s first president. Warnock said that the cruise will “primarily honour Cal.”

Hanson, the founding president of TWU, served the then junior college from 1962 to 1974. This will be the former president’s last appearance at a reunion function.
“In 2001 he said it was the last reunion he would do,” said Brenda Evans of Alumni Relations. “We asked him if we had a reunion on a cruise, would he come. He said yes.”

Dr. Hanson will be sharing his wealth of knowledge during daily devotionals as one of the three guest speakers on the cruise. The guest speakers are part of an informational series called Lifelong Learning, whose motto is: you are never too old to learn. The Lifelong Learning series presents a number of informational lectures throughout the year which are open to past and present students of TWU, as well of members from the surrounding communities.

“This is a great way to showcase the phenomenal intellectual property we have here at Trinity,” said Warnock.
Dr. Don Page, who is best known for his work on leadership development and for the creation of the highly acclaimed Master of Arts in Leadership, will speak about leadership in the marketplace.

Dr. Peter Flint, internationally renowned for his work on the Dead Sea Scrolls, is also on the program.
“It is a way for alumni to reconnect with one another,” said Evans. “As well, it is a great way to showcase the university. It’s an opportunity to impact 2000 other people with who we are at TWU.”

Depending on the success of this inaugural venture, there may be more cruise trips planned in the future for other alumni. Carnival Cruise Line will make a donation to TWU based on the number of people who sail.
