Student Media
Trinity Western University repeatedly boasts about its A+ quality of education according to the Globe and Mail. But, what about it’s on-campus media? TWU doesn’t have too much of it, it only offers up Mars’ Hill and Pillar, which is less than what is available at some other institutions, but at least what is done here is done well.
So, this is great, but right now, mid January, you have either been here a while or are just starting, but regardless, you want your investment to be worthwhile. And at TWU the investment is very steep. You might be thinking about how life at your other possible choices for post secondary education looks now. Is the grass greener on the other side? As far as your campus media goes, we are punching well above our weight class.
The paper you have in your hands right now won the Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award in 2008, and has steadily been a finalist for the award since 2005. Though it hasn’t always won, getting to the finals in any North America-wide competition is exciting. Mars’ Hill is read widely on campus and is often a great conversation piece.
Pillar, Trinity’s yearbook, exists because of our size. TWU is a smaller school, which allows for a yearbook to exist. It has received recognition from the College Media Advisors in their annual “Best of Collegiate Design” competition, winning second place for its cover design. Also, Pillar is supplemented with The Reel, the video yearbook. Imagine if UBC made a yearbook annually, it would be massive. How could you possibly fit 37,000 faces into one book? Let alone snapshots from events and other memories. This is where TWU is beneficial, with around 2,000 undergraduates, we can make a yearbook that is not only award winning, but worth cherishing.
UBC, UVic, UFV and Biola are valid alternatives, but how do they compare to your decision to attend TWU? Well, if you are measuring their student media, it is hard to compare. UBC, UVic and UFV are much larger than TWU, and a larger student body allows for greater opportunities. All of these institutions boast radio stations and newspapers, with UBC and UVic boasting magazines. UBC alone has 13 different publications. Meanwhile, Biola, a school similar in stature to TWU, boasts a cinema school, as well as a magazine, which won a Pacemaker in 2008.
TWU, when compared to other schools is small, but our reputation and our on campus media are great for our size. If you would like to get involved in any of our media services contact Audrey Martin at audrey.martin@twu.ca.
