TWU earns first win in Abbotsford, splits weekend
In Sports, Volume 12 Issue 6 @ 2:17 PM

By Eli Nathaniel

The Spartans men’s basketball team played their final two league games of the semester over the weekend, both on the road, as they visited the University College of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, B.C. The Spartans not only wanted to leapfrog UCFV in the standings, but were also pressing to clinch their first ever victory over the Cascades, when playing UCFV on the road.

Friday night’s contest saw Trinity Western University get off to an excellent start, leading the game by 11 points by the midway mark of the first quarter. The lead was cut in half before the break however, as the Cascades charged back with an 11-2 run before the buzzer. In the second quarter, however, the Cascades were dominant. With UCFV up 38-30 at the start of the third, the Spartans put the heat on the following quarter. The Cascades managed to hold on to their lead however, and entered the final frame with a 54-47 lead. With seven minutes remaining, TWU was able to pull within one, but got no closer. The Cascades won the game 70-64.

The following evening, the Spartans were finally able to show the hometown UCFV crowd that TWU means business. For the first time since UCFV’s entrance into the CIS, the Spartans defeated them in the Envision Athletic Centre. The final score was 81-76.
The Spartans now occupy fifth place in the Pacific Division with a 4-8 record.
