The Key to Flourishing at TWU

The one crucial factor to flourishing at a place such as TWU is not to be top of the class, to have the most friends, or to win the most accolades. It is to make this place your own.

Make classrooms your place of mental exercise, orchestral or soccer practice your place of recreation and re-creation. Make Alloway Library your garden of digging and growing. Make chapel’s daily rhythm of song and service and prayer your place of awakening and illumination. Make this place your own, make these people your people, make this life your life.

When you were a kid and your dad bought you your first baseball glove, you pounded and pounded that tough leather glove with your small hands until you could finally squeeze it shut and were at last were playing catch like a Blue Jay. Trinity is like that baseball glove. The university is no more than a pile of brick and dry wall, a labrynth of Douglas corridors, and a legend of archaic dancing rules. Until you inhabit it and pound its glove to make it your own, it is then that you can allow Trinity to make you its own – to give you experiences, knowledge, adventures, friendships, and perspectives you never imagined. Make Trinity your own and then let it make you its own.

More importantly, pound the glove of truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation until you find out what these words mean in body, mind, and spirit. Make the life of the Church your own so much that if the Church is rotten, there will be no one to blame but you. Then let the Word make you its own, and receive the heritage and destiny of the Church more than any one could long for or lay claim to. In this, you will discover true wisdom and true holiness, because true wisdom and true holiness are knowing and reflecting and embodying the mind of Christ, and at the mind of Christ in God is this: He has wrestled with us, He has cherished us. He has longed for us and sought us and has shaped Himself for one reason – to make us His own.
