High-flying, bone-defying

Flag football has had a great season this year. Despite some cancellations due to weather and Hootenanny, there has been a consistent stream of intense games and solid competition.

Last Tuesday night’s games were no exception, and once again, defense overpowered offense. 6 Upper downed 8/9 Upper by a score of 14-6 in a game that was played on a shortened surface. It was the Urness Duo doing most of the damage for a deep 6 Upper team. Due to field repairs, the game was forced to be played on a much narrower surface, and 8/9 Upper felt the ill effects. The game was plagued by seven interceptions, an uncanny amount considering the caliber of the quarterbacks. Nonetheless, 6 Upper prevailed, clinching the first playoff spot and rounding out their games with a 4-0 tally. 8/9 Upper fell to a record of 1-2. Barrett Urness comments on the 6 Upper season,

“Our team usually heads out to the field 15 minutes early to warm up and run some passing routes as well as practice our plays, but before it all goes down we pump our team up with a little music by Roy Jones Jr. and his song “Can’t be Touched”.  Although it’s “flag football” the heated games don’t necessarily stay contact free.  Often when the adrenaline reaches its climax our team has experienced a few bone-crushing hits, such as in our overtime win two games ago where our receiver (me) was bashed into the end zone barely holding onto the ball after a perfect pass by our quarterback, Jordan Urness. There was definitely no intention of grabbing the flag.

But football has definitely been an awesome experience, I would recommend every guy get involved. Between the high flying interceptions and touchdown receptions, my experience in flag football so far has been one well worth the investment and definitely will be even more worth it when 6 upper is named dorm football champions.”

Moving over one dorm, the high powered 7 Upper offense was tamed by a relentless 2/3 Lower defense, as 7 Upper managed only a single score in a 6-0 win. Most of this game was battled in the trenches as gritty lineman dug in their heels. The overpowering 7 Upper line, led by Phil McCleerey and Matt Buys, brought a physical rush on every play, forcing 2/3 Lower to move their starting quarterback to the o-line to relieve pressure. This move proved costly as the 2/3 Lower offense was unable to connect for a score. 7 Upper moves to 3-0 on the year and can seal their division with a win next Tuesday. 2/3 Lower falls to 2-1, but is still in contention for a division title.
