Love your neighbour

The theme around campus this year is “Renewing our minds, becoming like Christ.” To become like Christ means to exemplify the greatest command: loving God, and loving our neighbour as ourselves. For many of us loving God comes in our own time, but in coming to TWU, we have all become neighbours to one another. So how do we show this Christ-like love? Here are twenty-five easy ways you can express your love for your TWU neighbour:

1. Smile and greet them as you pass by
2. Help them carry a heavy load
3. Open the door for them
4. Listen to them when they need to talk
5. Tell them when they have spinach in their teeth
6. Be kind and greet those who work on campus
7. Pray with them if they are having a bad day
8. Clean up after them
9. Bring them soup if they are sick
10. Sit down to coffee if you haven’t gotten to know them yet
11. Be courageous in telling them how much you care
12. Grieve with them if they have lost someone close
13. Say hello to those who don’t know you yet
14. Sit and eat with someone who always eats alone
15. Give them a flower to cheer them up
16. Pray for those who are headed down the wrong path
17. Tutor others if you excel in a subject
18. Recognize them with a word of praise
19. Carry their bag if they are on crutches, in a wheel chair or have a bad back
20. Stop gossip when you hear it
21. Use their names – they might be honoured or surprised you remembered
22. Invite them to join you at an on-campus event
23. Defend those who can’t defend themselves
24. Pay them a compliment – and mean it
25. Give them a hug when you know they need it

To become like Christ, we must love as he loved and serve as he served. God has called us all here to love and serve one another. It is up to each of us to choose to love our TWU neighbours each day. Get out there. Don’t let this list hinder your creative love style. We must all choose the roads that lead us to become more like Christ; let’s do it by loving one another each day. To God be the glory.
