Mars’ Love

Dear Mars’ Love,

I have spent the last few days alarmed at my constant longing for a certain girl whom I’ve only met once. My attention was captured from the first witty comment and flick of her hand through her hair. I know that everyone falls in love, but is this really how it should happen? I cannot erase her from my mind: her mysterious smile, sun-kissed skin and dark eyelashes. A part of me wishes my friends would think she’s a babe and a catch, but instead they laugh when I tell them of my recent infatuation. The worst part is, she doesn’t even realize I exist!

Dear enamoured young sir,

I entreat your patience for a few moments, and pray that you, mere mortal, may glimpse an answer to the secrets of love that transcend time. For your jocular companions’ sake, note this: “reason and love keep little company together.” Perchance you are transfigured by your lady’s shape, and pleasant hue, perchance her voice sounds sweeter than birds’, nay sweeter than honey; and though it all amounts to nothing in the eyes of those around you, in your heart lays the truth. Beauty is for the beholder’s pleasure alone and therefore your companions will never behold the fair maid through the lenses that you gaze. You say she is beautiful and so she is “to be wooed; she is woman, and therefore to be won.” But beware of winning the lady belonging to someone else; with great caution search yourself truly for the motives of your affection. Important also is to take her emotions into consideration for “love from one side hurts, but love from two sides heals.” If you feel the timing is impeccable and your affection is mutual, you may proceed to hail down oaths that she is yours alone. Be clear with your intentions and swiftly “bewitch the fair, sweet lady” in your charming way. Though “the course of love never did run smooth,” be grateful for the chance to acquaint your heart with these emotions.

– William Shakespeare
