It’s Not Your Body

March 23, 2006

I will try to respond to Shelby Caravetta’s pro-choice article in the spirit of II Tim. 2:24.
“A woman’s right to choose is a fundamental right to all women.”

Says who? Ms. Caravetta doesn’t justify this; she assumes it. Determing human rights and wrongs is a deep worldview question, and not one to be answered cavalierly.

Secondly, Ms. Caravetta denies female babies their fundamental right to survive the womb. It does not follow from the mere fact of pregnancy that a woman automatically has a right to do as she wishes with the unborn.

“. . . I do not want Parliament . . . making decisions in regards to how I choose to operate my body.”
First, it’s not your body; it’s owned by your Creator. Secondly, it’s not one body, but two. And in regard to the second body Ms. Caravetta has simply ignored the key question: What is the fetus? Is it, or is it not, a human life? Ms. Caravetta doesn’t explore this crucial question.

“I am . . . recogniz[ing] the separation of church and state . . . . I do not believe in imposing my biblical views onto other people.”

Law, by its very nature, is the imposition of a moral viewpoint. Many laws deny citizens the freedom to choose certain actions that have traditionally been perceived to be contrary to the good of society as a whole. It can easily be argued that killing the unborn is contrary to the good of society as a whole.

Also, the notion of “separation of church and state” is often distorted and abused. I am the last person to argue for church control over society. But all laws hinge on a worldview; “separation of church and state” does not mean that Christians are to leave their worldviews at home when they go to work in the halls of legislation. “Separation of church and state” hardly means that the state has the right to assume the non-personhood of the fetus and declare open season on the unborn.

I started with a reference to II Tim. 2:24. Ms. Caravetta’s pro-choice stance, along with her earlier praise of ex-Prime Minister Paul Martin for his “achievement” of same-sex marriage, prompts me to urge her to also meditate on verses 25-26 and consider whatever the ramifications may be in her own life.

Than if women have a right babies have a right to life too. Becuase before you were a woman, you were a baby. Now wouldn’t you want to let someone else live that life also? Think about it. Parliament does make our decisions whether we want them to or not. They are in charge of our taxes, houses, marriage, schooling, friends, life, ethics, etc. They’re in there not matter what. A baby can’t speak in the fetus, that’s why we are here to speak for them. There are other alternatives: adoption, orphanages, or whatever. Murder is murder, I know thats a pretty weak argument, but killing a fetus is murder, you kill that something inside of you. You also kill a part of yourslef when you have an abortion. Not from experience, but from what I have been told.

Got something to say?
