RAYMOND RESPONDS
Dear Editor,
Your latest editorial piece deserves a response. As you know, the Board of Governors of the university are meeting next week (Feb 1-3). Two days are devoted to training by Miriam Carver in Policy Governance. I’ve invited two students, along with two faculty and two staff, to join in on the training along with the Board and the President’s Cabinet. Should the Board adopt the policy governance model on which they are being trained, and I believe they will, they then will have the opportunity to revisit questions surrounding how they govern themselves, including their composition (who, how many, etc.).
Following the training, later in the Spring/Summer, the question of student representation will be worked through. I personally have no problem with the idea of student representation, but the Board will have to wrestle with the question along with other matters of “representation”. The policy governance framework they are likely to adopt concerns itself with how to formulate good policy directions more than making sure all kinds of constituencies are covered. Nevertheless, they will face the issue squarely regarding student presence on the Board.
I believe the larger concern should be how to open the university on a daily basis to all the voices that need to be heard, not just one voice three times a year on the board.
Thanks for your service to TWU in the important role you presently hold. You do your work exceedingly well.
Blessings,
Dr. Jonathan Raymond
President, TWU
