TWUSA member explains resignation

While the decision to resign from TWUSA was a difficult one to make, I stand by it. Although this semester with TWUSA has been enjoyable, I have been discouraged by the way that Executive has been managed. My resignation is not just due to the cancellation of “Party Like a Virgin,” it is directly related to the lack of communication amongst the Executive members of TWUSA; a flawed system of communication that has been ongoing since the beginning of the semester. Several non-democratic decisions were made throughout this semester that were disappointing, and though this issue was addressed by Executive, it has still continued to happen. Because a level of trust was broken within the Executive leadership, I find that my position and the student voice that I represent have not been respected. While I understand that the situation regarding the cancellation of “Party like a Virgin” was complicated, due to various student concerns, the manner in which it was dealt with was improper. In making a last minute decision right before the event was to take place, the responsibilities and value of not only my role on TWUSA, but others as well, was demoralized. Although it is difficult for me to step down from a position that the student body elected me into, I think that it will be more effective for me to be involved outside of TWUSA. I strongly believe in the TWUSA mission, agreeing that the council is in place to “initiate and implement a network of communication by which student concerns and interests are positively represented to the various sectors of the University,” and I hope that students will voice their opinions. I would also encourage students to drop by the TWUSA office and find out what TWUSA’s current goals and projects are.

Many Thanks.
