As of March 1, Trinity Western University’s Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa is without an Executive Director. Paul Wilson has resigned from the position to become the Senior Policy Advisor to Canada’s new Minister of Justice, the Honorable Vic Toews.

“I have talked with Paul over the last couple of years about the possibility of him leaving,” said Professor John Dyck, academic liasion for the LLC, “[so] I wasn’t so much surprised by [his resignation] as by it happening midway through the semester…it came about because the Conservatives won control of government.”

Wilson has said he would “be open to continued affiliation,” with the LLC, according to Dyck, although it is uncertain in what capacity.

“I think in general, we’re just excited by this opportunity for Paul, and in fact believe that it will have a positive affect for our continued access for students on Parliament Hill.”

Dyck said that he will be taking on a temporary supervisory role, and that on-site responsibilities will be taken up by Administrative Assistant Triscilla Harwood and Community Life Coordinator Mark Lott. Dyck is uncertain when a new Director will be hired, but said that a first meeting to discuss the issue will be held “very soon.”

“I don’t have any idea how in the world they’re going to replace him…I can’t even imagine the LLC without Paul,” said fourth year student Hannah McKeeth, who spent the fall of 2004 at the LLC. “I definitely think it will be a huge loss.”

Wilson “knew how to manouever in the political world and make connections,” said McKeeth, noting that this was very beneficial to students for whom Wilson found internship placements as part of the LLC program.

“He did such a good job organizing the internships,” said third year student Jessica Wiebe, who spent last semester at the LLC.

“Paul certainly had many of the contacts necessary [for student internships], particularly on Parliament Hill, so our internships were easily firmed up,” said Dyck. “I have developed relationships with many of the contacts, [and] Paul will continue to work with us in this regard.”

Wilson “knew a lot of people, and he was really respected on both sides” of the political spectrum, said Mckeeth. More than that, though, McKeeth said, Wilson is “such a godly man,” who is “really sensitive to [students] as whole people.”

Wilson had been with the LLC since its inception in 2002.

Paul was great with the LLC. He’ll be missed, but still have to wish him the best of luck with Toews.

Got something to say?
