The Spartans men’s basketball team seems to have finally taken a turn for the better. After a season in which the team was plagued with bad news, the Spartans recently announced the hiring of their new head coach Scott Allen. The Spartans also confirmed that 6′6″ Abbotsford native Jacob Doerksen, a former CIS Championship Tournament All-Star and 2006 CIS Rookie of the Year, has committed to play for TWU for the upcoming 2008-2009 campaign. Columbia Bible College’s All-Star guard Louis Hurd will also be joining the Spartans fold this upcoming season.
Allen joins the Spartans after closing out 15 successful years with the Warriors of White Rock’s Christian Academy. During his time with the warriors, Allen compiled a staggering record of 503-117 and added plenty of hardware, most notably three BC Boys AAA Provincial Championships in 1999, 2003 and 2005. In addition, the Spartan’s new bench boss has coached British Columbia’s Provincial U17, U16 and U15 teams.
The Spartans should also be encouraged by the signing of new teammates Doerksen, and Hurd. After taking a break from basketball for the entire duration of last season, Doerksen joins the Spartans after having much success with the University of Victoria Vikes. In his last season with the Vikes, Doerksen led his team with an average points per game of 14 and was second on the team with an average of five rebounds per game. For his efforts that season, Doerksen was named to the Canada West Second All-Star Team. In his rookie year, Doerksen helped the UVic team make it to the CIS National Championship final, but lost 73-67 to Carleton. Doerksen led his team in that final game with 22 points and six rebounds.
Hurd has also had much success in his basketball career. He led the BCCAA in scoring with 20.2 points-per-game and was third in the league with 4.5 assists per game last season. The Everett, WA native led the Bearcats to a fourth place finish in BC, earning him Second Team All-Star honours.
