BATTLING THE PORN MONSTER
While pornography may not be an ordinary topic in Christian school chapel services, counselor Mike Cusick is happy to see that universities such as Trinity Western University are now willing to talk about it.
“Five years ago it was unheard of,” Cusick said about porn messages. “Ten years ago it would have been considered taboo. Twenty years ago…board members would have resigned.”
Cusick, who is based in Denver, Colorado, addressed the topic with students at chapel last week.
“I think it’s important,” he said. “There are very few places that are talking about this kind of thing. I applaud TWU for having me come.”
According to Canadian college statistics, 87 per cent of students have reported to be involved with online pornography in some way, Cusick said, and TWU’s campus wouldn’t be much different.
“Addiction is the idea that we all go to broken cisterns to satisfy our deep thirsts,” Cusick said, adding that pornography addicts people through its broken promises of making participants feel alive, loved and wanted.
Cusick, whose ministry Restoring the Soul works with Christian leaders and pastors, said he’s excited to talk with students, who he believes are the next generation’s leaders.
“I feel like I get to be a part of that,” he said.
Cusick suggested website www.pureintimacy.org as a good resource for information and links on pornography and other addictions.
