“Find your fit” at TWU’s second career fair

Trinity Western University’s second annual Career Fair themed “Find Your Fit” will take place next semester on Jan. 21 at 11:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Hosting the event are the Career Development & Career Experience Offices, with assistance from the Alumni department. Last year the event was a huge success, boasting 45 employers and the attendance of hundreds of TWU students. This success last year called for a move to a bigger location: the Enarson Gymnasium. This event is designed for students that want to learn more about the workforce or find employment that fits them, regardless of major or year.

Prior to attending, students also have the chance to participate in “Pre-Career Fair workshops” that aid students in the process of writing resumes and preparing for interviews. The students attending the Career Fair will have a competitive advantage over other job candidates, because they are able to meet the employers first hand and ask questions.

“The Career Fair offers an opportunity for every student to learn more about the workplace whether for summer employment, a possible internship, practicum, co-op experience or for full-time employment upon graduation,” said Michael Teeter, Coordinator of Student Leadership Development and the Career Experience Office.

One common misconception is that the career fair is only beneficial to business students; a large variety of organizations will be seeking students regardless of subject of study, however. Some organizations that will be present at the fair include BC Hydro, Canada Revenue Agency, TD Canada Trust, Chartered Accountants of BC, Communities Supportive Care, and Fraser Health, along with educational organizations such as Hess Education Canada and graduate programs like ACTS Seminaries and TWU Graduate Studies.

“Employers in general are looking for students who are competent, informed and personable. Students who research the companies in advance and attend Career Fair workshops are most likely to put their best foot forward in these areas,” says Teeter.

Students are also advised to dress professionally and bring along copies of their resumes to hand out. Students are also encouraged to pre-register before Jan. 18 to receive a welcome package and the opportunity to win door prizes. Students can register at the Student Success Centre in RSC.
