Bookstore birthday bash

The Trinity Western University Bookstore celebrated the birthday of C.S. Lewis last Tuesday. The man who created Narnia and numerous theological works was celebrated as turning 113 with cake, coffee, and a Facebook trivia contest held on the week leading up the event. Over 100 students, faculty, and staff members attended C.S. Lewis’ Birthday Party on November 29, which meant the birthday cake went fast. Participants were not only treated to free cake and coffee, but also to readings of some of Lewis’ works. Dr. Stackpole, a professor at Redeemer Pacific College, delighted a plethora of the partygoers with a reading from The Horse and His Boy, and The Weight of Glory.

Jeff Thiessen, the general manager of the TWU Bookstore, explained that the Bookstore had hosted a C.S. Lewis birthday party in the past, about four or five years ago, and found that Lewis “just resonates so well with the campus,” so they decided to do it again. “And November is a nice time to have an event,” Thiessen added with a smile.

C.S. Lewis is the subject of many different classes held at TWU, as well as being a feature character in TWU’s last distinguished lecture by Dr. Matthew Dickerson early last month. His works are studied in English fantasy classes as well as in his own Apologetics class in the Religious Studies department. Both his fiction and non-fiction books continue to sell well at the bookstore throughout the year.

It has been an event-heavy semester for the Bookstore, as they have also had a National Student Day party, two book signings, and are having their Winter Wipeout Sale this week (December 5-9). Thiessen said that the Bookstore is planning a few more events in the springtime, but the details are not yet finalized. The bookstore also released an apology on Facebook for not committing more time and cake towards the 127th birthday of Samuel Clemens on November 30.
