Men earn a win Women take a loss

It was another mediocre weekend for Spartans basketball this past Friday and Saturday night. The women’s team continues to slide deeper in the loss column playing against the #10 team in the country, the Alberta Pandas.

As far as the men’s squad is concerned, the Spartans continued their dominant play this season, playing both games at the Langley Events Centre this past weekend.

On Friday, the women’s Spartans lost 66-40 in a disappointing second quarter effort that saw the team only score a combined total of three points. Alberta shot 47.5 percent from the field compared to the Spartans 20 percent that saw Corina Reimer and Tiffany Olsen lead the way offensively with 16 and 15 points. A theme for the Spartans thus far has to be their inability to play a full 40 minutes well.

On Saturday, the Spartans rebounded. Sort of. The Spartans again fell to the Pandas 63-48 but played a much better game overall. The Spartans forced 22 turnovers against the Pandas and also held the Alberta squad to three quarters of scoring 15 points or less. However, the Spartans inability to score cost them again on Saturday night, as they shot less than 30 percent for the second straight game. Janelle Traber, with 14 points, and Keely Goertzen, with 12 points, led the way offensively for the Spartans while Holly Storm led the team with six rebounds. The Spartans will look to find their winning ways this upcoming weekend as they take on Winnipeg in Manitoba.

As far as the men go, the Spartans continue to be the team causing all kinds of noise this year. The Spartans hosted the Alberta Pandas and quickly sent them back to Calgary. The Spartans used an efficient second half to beat the Panda’s 96-83 that saw Jacob Doerksen and Kyle Coston score 23 points and combine for 14 rebounds on the night. Calvin Westbrook chipped in 19 points on the night. The Spartans efficient offense shot nearly 60 percent from the field on the night and went 10/21 from three-point land to continue their winning ways.

On Saturday night, it was much of the same for the Spartans who defeated the Pandas 89-78. Jacob Doerksen scored 25 points on the night to go along with six rebounds to improve the Spartans overall record to an impressive 8-2 while dropping the Panda’s record to a respectable 5-3. The Spartans will look to improve their position in the standings this weekend as they travel to Winnipeg.
