New ISJC president hopes for everyday justice
This year’s president of the International Social Justice Club (ISJC) is Anna Vogt. The third-year mature student sees herself as empowered to make a difference and desires to see TWU students become aware of global issues.
“ISJC exposed me to a lot of areas that need justice and organization,” said Vogt. In her first year, Vogt joined ISJC and her vision was to see God’s love shown to the poor and oppressed; talking with people who shared this vision deepened her passion. She continued learning about issues, hearing from speakers and helping with fundraisers, until this year the opportunity to lead ISJC was available.
Before majoring in international studies at TWU, Vogt completed four years of Bible college in Alberta. In addition, Vogt lived in Bolivia for one year, volunteering in a children’s home. “I felt moved to do something about what I had seen…I felt I could no longer be an observer,” says Vogt.
Vogt is excited about ISJC partnering with the Environmental Club this year. While it is early in the term, Vogt’s goals are to “connect more of campus with the vision of social justice.” She also wants to challenge students to ask themselves “what can I do right now?”
Social justice is often an overwhelming sea of issues, making small efforts seem insignificant. But Vogt wants to encourage students that it starts with everyday choices.
“We’re called to live out the kingdom of God here on earth, and the choices we make can build that kingdom,” says Vogt.
