News Briefs: Yearbook Design Honored, UComm Award
Yearbook design honored
The 2006-2007 edition of Pillar, Trinity Western University’s yearbook, received two awards from The College Media Advisers’ Best of Collegiate Design competition.
Pillar won second place for Student Life Spread and fourth place for Cover Design.
The contest saw 87 entrants, most schools being from the U.S. TWU competed against schools including Washington State University, University of Oregon, Biola University, and Vanderbilt University. Out of the 25 categories for newspaper, magazine, yearbook and online design, seven categories focused on yearbooks.
Pillar Editor-in-Chief Hillary Grams designed the cover that included an illustration by Samantha Lowe, who also designed the winning student life spread. Throughout the process of creating the yearbook, Grams was supported by her co-design editors Johnny Wikkerink and Kayla Gerber. The most rewarding aspect of working on the project, said Grams, was that the Pillar team “started out with nothing and ended up winning two awards.”
The winning designs for all the categories are featured in the annual Best of Collegiate Design magazine.
Promotional materials win awards
University Communications was recently awarded two GOLD awards for Student & Alumni Publications category from the Council for the Advancement and Success of Education (CASE).
UComm’s recent 2007/2008 undergraduate Viewbook and financial aid brochure were given the awards. Of the 56 entrants, only 13 awards were given.
“This is very encouraging for us,” said communications specialist Veronica Collins, “especially because we are such a small school with limited resources.”
UComm works under External Relations to promote Trinity Western University outside the university. The award-winning materials will be given to potential students for recruitment.
Collins said she was happy with the finished products, and that they were “the best materials to recruit new students, especially with our enrolment problems.”
