Quaint Christmas

On December 1st, 2011, the Trinity Western University Student Association hosted the first ever Spirit of Christmas: Remix. This was an evening featuring three different events; a Farmers Market, Pie Contest and Open Mic Night that were all focused on bringing some Christmas cheer to campus. The atrium was decorated with tinsel, apple cider, and other festive beverages were available while students and community members alike could sit and relax by the virtual fireplace.

The original event, Spirit of Christmas, has been a campus and community favorite in the past. However, funds this year were not available due to the upcoming 50th Anniversary of TWU, and therefore the event was postponed. TWUSA recognized that this was an enjoyable evening for many, and decided to recreate this favorite Christmas event.

There were 15 vendors at the Farmers Market, selling a variety of products that included computer covers, cards, hats, baked treats, and much more. Fourth year student Cameron Reed was selling cutting boards, where all the proceeds were going towards supporting the ecoforestry project at TWU. Third year student Rianna Vandekamp, had a display full of jewelry, selling products on behalf of her friends. The International Social Justice Club (ISJC) was promoting the Fast for Africa, along with selling Chai tea and sweet treats. The Psych Club was selling donuts to raise funds for their upcoming projects and events.

At 9:30 PM, the couches surrounding the stage filled up and the room silenced as Open Mic Night began. The set list filled up quickly with many students eager to share their musical skills and theatrical performances. A variety of talented musicians, comedians and dancers preformed throughout the night. The Men’s Glee Club kicked off the night with three Christmas tunes. OMN veterans Les Enfants preformed several songs, wishing member JJ Strat farewell, as this was his last OMN. The evening concluded with Paul Robinson playing an acoustic melody.

Executive Director of Events, Kelly Lamb, was impressed with the number of people that came out and commented, “It was great to see TWU support students and local vendors. It continues to surprise me how talented our TWU community really is. This was a great event that I hope will continue in the future”.
