Rock climbing wall coming soon
Over ten years ago, Trinity Western Universtiy had a rock climbing wall that was taken down to make more room for classroom space.
Now, the idea is being resurrected and a new rock climbing wall could be erected in the upper southeast corner of the mezzanine floor in the Enarson Gym as early as spring 2010.
According to David Wilson, fourth year, leader of the outdoor club and one of the main organizers of the proposal, “[the university is] hoping to have it in by January … but the keyword is hope.”
Currently any student that wishes to participate in rock climbing must drive at least 40 minutes to a local gym or rock climbing centre.
A bouldering wall would be open to general student use. As well, the department of Human Kinetics could also enhance its rock climbing class by allowing students to develop and practice their skills on campus.
A bouldering wall would also help continue to grow Trinity’s Outdoor Club’s appeal, giving students another place to meet and encourage them to stay healthy.
According to an early proposal written by Wilson, Daryl Page and Dale Baumgartner, with planning and materials in hand, the project could be completed in three weeks to a month.
In large part the new rock climbing wall would be paid for by the new student recreation fee introduced this past fall semester.
Having a rock climbing wall on campus would enhance the universities recreational offerings beyond traditional sports. This enhancement to his outdoor pursuits that the addition of the bouldering wall would create excites Wilson. “I’d be absolutely stoked to have a wall on campus that you can get pumped on every day.”
