School of Nursing makes its mark at TWU
On Oct. 22nd, Trinity Western University’s School of Nursing hosted its official launch event. The transition of the nursing department to the School of Nursing began May 1st 2009.
“We as a faculty are very excited about this change towards more independence and the strengthening of our ability to attain the potential of nursing education at Trinity Western University,” said Dr. Landa Terblanche, Dean of the School of Nursing.
The School of Nursing’s vision is to “foster values-based nursing, educational vitality, excellence in scholarship in practice, and transformation through Christian graduate nursing education.”
TWU is well known for its nursing program. Established in 1993, the department of nursing has seen a steady rise in enrolment. Each year there is a large demand for entrance into the highly competitive program, which only accepts 50 first year students.
The establishment of the School of Nursing came with several advantages.
First, the benefits of being a school enhanced the profile of nursing at TWU, which increases the ability to get external funding.
Second, the diversity of nursing education in the school allows professors to offer undergraduate, graduate and continuing education programs and courses.
Third, the B.C. nursing profession now promotes partnerships between practice and education. By being a school, TWU Nursing can take full advantage of partnership opportunities when they occur. This will be a great asset for nursing students.
The differentiation provided by the school structure enhances the School of Nursing’s ability to pursue professional excellence and opportunities in teaching, research and service. The School of Nursing will establish TWU as a leader in the field of
nursing education.
