TWUSA passes $270,368 budget to “Fill the Need”

At 1:10 on Thursday, September 30th, TWUSA Vice President Nathan Giede called to order the Annual General Meeting for the Trinity Western University Student Association. Unfortunately there weren’t enough voting council members present to equal quorum, the minimum number required to hold a TWUSA business meeting. Luckily, with the late arrival of Vice President for Academics Katie Hawdon, quorum was reached, the meeting truly began, and council voted on the 2010-2011 budget.

According to Jonathan Gibson, Vice President for Finance, a large goal in the budget was to meet the students’ needs, as per this year’s vision, but also to reduce costs of events and services to students. “Our thought process was, let’s lessen the burden on students.” This idea will be applied to things such as the cost of Can-Am and Grad Banquet tickets, both annual events that have seen increases in ticket costs over the past few years.

Gibson also shared his goal to spend the large carry over from last year, approximately $42,000, on something relevant to this year’s students, but also sustainable by future councils.  Such initiatives include the planned purchase of a t-shirt press so students, clubs and dorms can design and create customized shirts, and bicycle rentals to students.

The largest expenses though, followed suit with those of previous years including $64,450 going to student leadership grants for council members, $18,747 going to campus events such as Hootenanny and Harvestfest, and a total of $111,270 going to student media, $45,253 of which Mars’ Hill receives.

The full budget, which is available on the TWUSA website, was passed without amendment and according to Gibson is “not only a budget, but also a plan to serve the student body of Trinity Western University.”
