TWUSA reps in short supply

The deadlines for elected and appointed Trinity Western University Student Association positions have come and gone, and still many spots have no applicants. Of the nine student-elected representative positions, only three representatives were elected to be a part of next year’s TWUSA.

TWUSA extended the application deadline further to March 16 and has actively advertised the open spots, speaking with students in the cafeteria, talking at dorm meetings, and posting many brightly-coloured posters.

Next year’s Executive Vice President Kerala Levitt believes the lack of interest is due to the fact that TWUSA plays more of a behind-the-scenes role on campus than other TWU programs, such as Student Life.

“People don’t know that there are other ways to be involved,” she said.

The three representatives who have been elected are Matthew Keller as Senior Representative, Benjamin Brook as Junior Representative, and Anthony De Guzman as Education Representative.

Keller, who was TWUSA’s 2004-2005 Freshman Representative, is excited to make some changes. He believes that with new administration at the school, TWUSA needs to be reworked as well. While Senior Rep is not an executive position, he believes he can make a difference.

“It’s a great position to do a lot with,” he said.

One of Brook’s focuses as Junior Rep is bridging the gap between juniors and other classes. He hopes to organize events between freshmen and juniors in particular, to facilitate friendships between freshmen and older students on campus.

“I know a lot of people,” he said, adding that this will allow him to know the concerns of juniors and be able to represent them to TWUSA.

Brook is also hoping to facilitate change on campus and believes that TWUSA “has [a lot] of potential” to do this.

De Guzman is looking forward to picking up where this year’s Education Rep left off. He hopes to build and maintain strong relationships with the Dean of Education and other faculty members.

“It’s not necessarily about making changes from last year,” he said, “but continuing with what we have.”
