Ontario universities report 8 sexual assaults in past week
October 1, 2007
TORONTO (CUP) – Eight separate reports of sexual assault have been reported at universities all across Ontario since September 1st.
The first sexual assault occurred at Carleton University in Ottawa, and since then, seven more have been reported across Ontario. Three separate attacks occurred at Laurentian University on Sept. 3, two the following night on Sept. 4, one at Wilfred Laurier University and the other at the University of Ottawa and on Sept. 7, two students from York University were sexually assaulted while sleeping in their residence room.
Several universities have increased security on campus. Officers from the Toronto Police Service have begun to patrol campuses to supplement the normal security patrols at York, and Carleton has made presentations to residence students concerning safety procedures on campus.
Detective Christine Long of the Toronto Police Sex Crimes Unit, who is investigating the assaults at York, said that while the eight incidents across the province are unique, there is a higher risk of assault at university campuses because people feel safer on campus.
In reality, she said, students are no safer on campus than anywhere else.
