Saw 2

November 3, 2005

This is not a movie for those with a weak stomach. This is not your easy-does-it horror flick because Jigsaw is back. And he still has a point to prove to his victims: if you do not cherish life, you do not deserve it. Detective John Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) is Jigsaw’s newest target. Over a video feed, Det. Matthews watches his son and eight others, oblivious of their connection, trapped in a house with only one way out. And if they play the game by the rules, all will survive.

What you will like: The gore. Directors and creators Darren Lynn Bousman and Leigh Whannell have new ways to make your skin crawl with sharp, pointy objects (a homemade mace, knives and, dare I say, broken and used syringes)—oh yes, there will be blood. The intelligence. I haven’t come across many horror movies with so much intellect. Plot twists and riddles keep the audience on their feet. The cinematography. Camera angles, lighting and set all contribute to the filth of the terror characters and storyline.

What you won’t like: Quality of acting. Horror films aren’t usually name-dropped during the Oscars, and Saw II is no different. Besides Mr. Wahlberg the other faces that are recognizable are Beverly Mitchell (7th Heaven, Lucy) and Franky G (Italian Job, Wrench).
Ultimately, Saw II sets you up for the Jigsaw thrillogy (or more). Bousman and Whannell have struck gold with a new cult classic horror film. It is difficult to say, but the sequel might deserve just as much attention as its predecessor

Now you go...

Got something to say?
